From youth environmental action to an accountable development institution.
Mikoko Development Foundation’s journey began with youth-led environmental awareness and developed through practical conservation into a structured platform connecting communities, education, climate action and sustainable development.
Three stages shaped the organization MDF is today.
Each stage expanded the scope of work while preserving youth participation, environmental stewardship and community action.
2006
ROOTS
Natural Ambassadors of Environmental Life and Education
MDF traces its roots to the Natural Ambassadors of Environmental Life and Education (NAELE), established in 2006 under the slogan “The Voice of Africans.” The initiative promoted environmental awareness and encouraged young people to respond to climate change and ecological degradation.
2016
PRACTICAL CONSERVATION
Mikoko Scout Group
In 2016, the initiative evolved into the Mikoko Scout Group, engaging young scouts in practical conservation, particularly mangrove restoration and environmental education. Students, teachers and local leaders were mobilized for tree planting and sustainable natural-resource management.
2019–PRESENT
INSTITUTIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Mikoko Development Foundation
Recognizing the need for a broader and more structured approach, the initiative developed into Mikoko Development Foundation in 2019. MDF expanded its foundation into programmes connecting conservation, education, climate action, community development, sustainable livelihoods and partnerships.
