SEED TO CARBON · MARINE & COASTAL RESTORATION

Guardians of the Mangroves

A community-centred marine and coastal restoration pathway focused on mangroves and associated coastal ecosystems, stewardship, evidence, survival/condition monitoring and blue-economy connections.

PROJECT AT A GLANCE

Protect the coast by strengthening ecosystems and the people who steward them

Guardians is the marine delivery pathway within Seed to Carbon and operates through approved sites, safeguards, community participation and evidence-based restoration.

WHAT

Mangrove and coastal ecosystem conservation/restoration, including nursery or propagule work where appropriate, rehabilitation, monitoring, community stewardship and related learning.

WHY

Mangroves and healthy coastal habitats support biodiversity, fisheries, shoreline protection, carbon storage and local livelihoods, but restoration must address the causes of degradation.

WHEN

Timing follows site ecology, tides, propagule availability, weather, community schedules and approved restoration plans rather than a fixed planting calendar.

HOW

Diagnose degradation → engage rights holders/community → assess hydrology/site suitability → choose restoration method → implement → monitor survival/condition → adapt and maintain stewardship.

WHO

BMUs, community groups, women and youth groups, coastal residents, MDF teams, marine specialists, government/resource authorities, donors and research/technical partners.

WHERE

Approved mangrove and coastal sites in Tanzania where ecological suitability, community participation, legal/resource authority and safeguards support action.

WHICH

Depending on site evidence, action may prioritize protection, natural regeneration, hydrological repair, assisted regeneration or planting; planting is not automatically the correct solution everywhere.

WHAT IF

If seedlings fail or habitat condition does not improve, monitoring should test causes such as hydrology, species/site mismatch, disturbance or protection gaps and trigger adaptive management.

IMPACTS & BENEFITS

Potential benefits include healthier coastal habitat, biodiversity and fisheries support, shoreline resilience, community skills, blue-economy opportunities, education and stronger evidence for long-term conservation investment.

RESTORATION WITH COMMUNITY STEWARDSHIP

Ecology and people are managed together

Right Method, Right Site

Use ecological diagnosis to decide whether protection, regeneration, rehabilitation or planting is appropriate.

Community Stewardship

Strengthen local participation, monitoring and benefit pathways so restoration can continue beyond a single funded activity.

Marine Evidence

Record sites, activities, ecological indicators, survival/condition, photographs and responsible teams for accountable reporting.

Become a guardian of resilient coastal ecosystems.

Engage as a community, school, technical institution, donor or corporate partner through MDF’s approved pathways.
